Rumen Dimitrov’s  “Jumping Circle” earth cylinder is Land Art personified. Dimitrov has created a cylinder of earth raised above the ground by removing exactly the same amount of earth, like a physical echo or leap of faith. Bamboo surrounds and defines this installation element. Next to this circle of earth and cut into the earth with the exact same measurements is a second circle. Seen together they give the impression that the earth has “jumped” from one place, the circle cut into the earth, to the second place “above the earth”. Working with these two levels the piece suggests simultaneously an opening to the earth and a projection to the sky. Father Sky and Mother Earth are brought together here. If seen from the sky, the installation could look like an infinity symbol, something that goes on forever… Made with a low-tech finesse, and simple resourcefulness, Dimitrov’s earth circles build a case for our place in the earth, and the symbolic power of a simple geometry like the circle in a natural landscape.
